Matching books with learners

Today kids we are going to be learning about stars. Raise your hand if you have ever walked outside and seen a bunch of stars in the sky? Stars can light up a dark sky and they are very pretty to look at. But do you know what stars actually are and how did they get there? If not, we are going to learn about it today! In this book, "Star Stuff" by Stephanie Sisson, it teaches you all about stars. Carl is the main character in this book, he is a young boy who went to the World's Fair 1939 and has been fascinated with stars ever since. In the book it goes through stages in Carl's life. He started out just looking at stars throughout his bedroom window, and ended up going really far in life relating to stars. We will have to read the book to see what happens to Carl! I think this book is a great book for teaching students about stars. I have heard many kids go outside and be so interested in stars and ask so many questions about it. I've even heard children say...

"The Flag We Love" by Pam Munoz Ryan and illustrated by Ralph Masiello is a great book for children. Everyday children (in most schools) stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and The National Anthem but its rare that any of them know the true meaning behind it and why they are even doing it. In this book it introduces to children what our flag represents and the meaning why we even do the Pledge and National Anthem. If you just did one whole lesson explaining to young children about this they wouldn't really take much from it and get bored with it. This book has illustrations on every page, that are fun and bright to really catch attention. Although this book is leaning more towards younger audience this is a book teens and even adults would enjoy reading!

Charlotte's Web y E.B. White is about a pig and his friendship with a spider. The pig is getting ready to get slaughtered by his farmer, but the spider writes messages in her web trying to get the farmer to let him live. This book is very popular and most people have at least watched the movie, if they haven't read the book. This book is typically for younger students, but I remember reading it and watching the movie as a young kid and I would get really upset about it. I then wouldn't watch it again until I was a little bit older, to realize it was just a movie. Although it can be sad, it does show children what can really happen and a lot of children do enjoy this book. It is one of those books that will never get old and forever be popular. 

"It's Raining Pigs and Noodles" by Jack Prelutsky This is a fun book the students will love. This book has a lot of poems for kids that include puns and rhymes. There are more than 100 poems in this book so you could even read a new poem each day in class. The poems are all about different things too like people and animals that really will keep the children entertained. 

POP! The Invention of Bubble Gum by Meghan McCarthy  This is a great Nonfiction book for kids. I think it would be good for 1st and 2nd graders. The students will love this book. It has interesting pictures on each picture about bubble gum, and facts about the history of how bubble gum was invented. You could really do a lot with this book. You could bring it different kinds of gum (flavors), you could bring in different bubble gum flavored things. Such as ice cream, cotton candy, suckers, etc. This is something that will get the children's attention, while also learning some history about it.
